I’ve already said how the smartwatch market is still pretty young, but if there is one company that has plenty of smartwatches under its belt, it is Samsung. After all, it already has the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear Fit, not to mention the Gear Live and Android Wear smartwatch.
If a recent trademark filing can be trusted, Samsung is apparently working a device known as the Gear S. This Gear S could be a long-rumored Gear Solo, which is possibly some version of the Gear 2 but with SIM card capabilities.
This means that you can have a watch that can connect to a mobile network without the use of your phone.
If this rumour is to be believed, then Samsung’s development of the Gear S could be in response to the another rumour from LG. Apparently the Life’s Good company has been working on a smartwatch with a SIM card as well.
Well, I suppose that we’ll have to see how this turns out with all these rumors about the Samsung and LG. If you really want to make the most of this post, I’ll add the rumors about the Apple iWatch and Microsoft’s Surface watch. Perhaps the real takeaway value of listening to smartwatch rumors is to see what direction the market is headed.
So, will every smartwatch have a SIM card? It would appear that way. However, who wants to pay extra for a SIM card in their watch and their phone? Perhaps here’s another trend in the mobile world: cheap subscription SIM cards for phones and/or watches.
